this election is over before it begins in the general election. in fredericksburg, you are looking at a republican district, and democratic candidates do not win here. that creates a real problem for most voters, because the decision of who will be in congress is made by a tiny i segment of the electorate. the first problem is the way that these lines are drawn, they are drawn for partisan advantage. republicans control virginia, they draw lines to help republicans. democrats control maryland, and they draw lines to help democrats. on and on it goes. that is the first problem. the second problem is the role that money place in politics. it is really problematic to imagine that politicians can legislate dispassionately when that they received extraordinary amounts of money from individual campaign contributions. i'm not talking necessarily about the hard money so much as some of the stuff going on in terms of super pacs and those things today. i'm far less bothered by the amount of money going in than i am by the problems of disclosure. one way we

i voted for the president the last election even though i am independent. there's a lot about the republican platform, the party platform that i agree with and there's a lot about the democratic party platform i don't agree with. but when it comes to leadership, it has been really embarrassing to watch mitt romney. it is just sad. so this will be his chance. peter he will pull it off or not. i am not going to vote for him just because of-principle of- he will pull it off or not. i am not going to vote for a mormon. it is the core of who he is because of his leadership in the turkischurch for 10 years. i feel that influences a lot of his decisions. host: nothing he can say tomorrow night would change your opinion? caller: no, but i would like to see him still be a viable candidate and have some ideas. the people who are surrounding him, his staff members, are the ones who really want to get in the white house, because they are planning to lead the white house. i don't believe he has what it takes to be a leader in the white house. host: a tweet -- which are

that is how obama got elected last time. host: well, bob, we have a rule at c-span for the "washington journal." we would like you to allow 30 days between your calls, but if you like to call back in another 30 days, we would love to have you on. guest: i think there's something interesting there. obviously, obama had a strategy in the last election. with hillary clinton, he put out his tax returns and said he had nothing to hide. he used that against mrs. clinton and is trying to do that again. the answer is -- if the democrats want to lb ronnie about putting out tax returns and the media want to lb ronnie -- if the democrats in the media want to lb ronnie about putting out tax returns, -- if the media want to pound romney about tax returns, you say they are just following the agenda. they did not want to focus on barack obama -- what house he bought and with who, and even when rezco was convicted and went to prison, it was like, "next thing. tomorrow, we will talk about his surfing or something." they do not want to answer

in new york state, instead of henry clay winning the election, who he should have, the election went to james k.polk, who was a slave owner, an expansionist, he annexed texas which became a state in 1845 and in 1846 he initiated the war with mexico, he provoked an incident that started the war with mexico. we defeated mexico and in 1848, we acquired from mexico the northern third of their country, which is currently the states of california, nevada, new mexico, arizona, and parts of wyoming, and colorado. so he had -- so you know, without -- if he hadn't won, if clay had won, i think we would have annexed texas but we may not have had those southwestern states. what polk wanted was the support on the pacific. he also wanted more land for slave owners. so those two parties really changed the outcome to an election in americano zero and american history. host: many people look to 1992, the reform party led -- led by ross perot and i'm going to show a portion of an interview, conducted by richard wolf of usa today, but at the time, many thought this would be the start of a third party,
